These sprockets are held on by a snap ring, which you can pry off with a small flat-blade screwdriver. When you replace the sprocket, it is a good idea to use a hammer and punch to seat the snap ring into its groove so that the sprocket can't accidentally pop off, leaving the brake inoperative! Sprockets available here.
So I gave up. I drive 95% of the time in manual mode and enjoy it. You don't have to use 1st gear at all most of the time if you don't want to. I would recommend to just shift manually and don't bother to go lower than second unless you want some extra acceleration from a stand still or want to enjoy hearing the engine run up.
